A microprocessor is a pc processor which contains the functions of a computer's central handling unit (CPU) on a single involved circuit (IC),[1] or for the most part a few included circuits.[2] The microprocessor is a multipurpose, clock driven, register structured, digital-integrated circuit which allows binary data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its storage area, and provides results as result. Microprocessors contain both combinational reasoning and sequential digital logic. Microprocessors operate on numbers and icons displayed in the binary numeral system.The integration of a whole CPU onto a single chip or on a few chips greatly reduced the price of processing ability, increasing efficiency. Integrated circuit processors are produced in large numbers by highly computerized processes producing a low per product cost. Single-chip processors increase trustworthiness as there are many fewer electric connections to fail. As microprocessor designs progress, the cost of making a chip (with smaller components built over a semiconductor chip the same size) generally remains the same.

Before microprocessors, small computer systems have been built using racks of circuit boards with many medium- and small-scale included circuits . Microprocessors merged this into one or a few large-scale ICs. Extended boosts in microprocessor capacity have since rendered other kinds of personal computers almost completely outdated (see history of computing hardware), with one or more microprocessors used in everything from the smallest embedded systems and handheld devices to the largest mainframes and supercomputers.
