A microprocessor is a computer processor which features the functions of an computer's central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit (IC),[1] or for the most part a few built-in circuits.[2] The microprocessor is a multipurpose, clock driven, register structured, digital-integrated circuit which allows binary data as source, processes it relating to instructions stored in its storage area, and provides results as output. Microprocessors contain both combinational logic and sequential digital reasoning. Microprocessors operate on numbers and symbols displayed in the binary numeral system. The integration of a whole CPU onto an individual chip or over a few chips greatly reduced the expense of processing electricity, increasing efficiency. Integrated circuit processors are stated in large numbers by highly computerized processes producing a low per unit cost. Single-chip processors increase reliability as there are many fewer electric connections to fail. As microprocessor designs progress, the price of making a chip (with smaller components built on the semiconductor chip the same size) generally remains the same.
Before microprocessors, small computer systems had been built using racks of circuit boards numerous medium- and small-scale designed circuits . Microprocessors merged this into one or a few large-scale ICs. Extended boosts in microprocessor capacity have since rendered other varieties of computer systems almost completely obsolete (see history of computing hardware), with one or more microprocessors used in everything from the tiniest embedded systems and handheld devices to the major mainframes and supercomputers.
